At Turning Tides, we know that homelessness has so many possible root causes – domestic violence, debt, addiction, grief or mental health challenges, to name a few.

We believe that real change comes from more than a roof over someone’s head. With kindness and experience, our team of staff and volunteers help people tackle the issues behind their homelessness. Homelessness must never be normalised; we stand for a world where every person has a place to call home.

Volunteers are the backbone of Turning Tides. By contributing your time and expertise, you help people affected by homelessness to rebuild their lives and look to the future with optimism.

Skills

What goes on here: Roffey Place will be a short-term accommodation service, where the needs of each individual are assessed and supported. In due course individuals will be supported to transition from Roffey Place to suitable longer-term accommodation that also meets their needs at that time. The service will be for local homeless people who have suffered multiple and often prolonged disadvantages throughout their life.

As such residents will typically remain in the service for between 6 and 9 months during which time, they will be supported to develop the skills and networks to be able to live independently in the community.
The service will adopt a multi-agency approach, with ample space and facilities to support this, including provision for organisations to work directly with clients and connect with one another onsite. A clinical room, counselling rooms, digital inclusions facilities and training rooms will support the delivery of therapeutic services, medical interventions, and skills development. We also have a large kitchen for catering and training. This holistic approach to well-being empowers clients to develop skills and independence.

We are looking for friendly and reliable volunteers to help create a warm and welcoming environment for our clients during evening sessions.
What the role involves:

Communicating clearly with staff on duty and being flexible to their needs.
Following confidentiality, professional boundaries, and health & safety policies at all times.
Preparing and cooking a simple evening meal.
Chatting with clients and helping to create a friendly, supportive atmosphere.
Assisting with tidying up after the meal.

Time commitment:

Around 2 hours per session
Flexible commitment – available weekly or bi‑weekly
